Purchasing New Appliances: A Buyer's Guide
‹ Return to Buyer's Guide index
Appliances are major purchases that you will live with for many years. A little planning helps you choose a model that fits your space, your habits and your budget.
1. Measure first
Measure the width, height and depth of the space, plus doorways and hallways on the way in. Leave room for ventilation and for doors to open fully.
2. Think about how you use it
A family of five needs a bigger refrigerator and washer than a single person. List the features you will really use and skip the ones you will not.
3. Compare specifications, not just prices
Capacity, noise level, energy consumption and warranty terms vary a lot between models that look similar. Product pages in this catalog list the key specifications side by side.
4. Check energy efficiency
ENERGY STAR qualified appliances use less electricity and water, which lowers running costs over the life of the product and may qualify for utility rebates.
5. Plan delivery and installation
Gas appliances, built-in units and dishwashers often need professional installation. Ask whether removal of the old appliance is included.
6. Understand the warranty
Most manufacturers provide a one-year limited warranty, with longer coverage on some components such as compressors or motors. Keep the receipt and register the product with the manufacturer.
